Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.

Veronica Mars (2019), Season 1 Movie Reviews

  • Will never watch any new material

    By meetshannon
I’ll watch the old seasons forever, but I will never watch past season three ever again. Season four did a complete disservice to Veronica’s character, any positive growth she could potentially accomplish, and most importantly the relationships with the rookie she surrounds herself with were all but slashed and discarded. I never watched only for the mysteries, it was to see Veronica learn and grow from the trauma she endured while also learning to open herself up to the love and support of her family and friends. That’s been ruined.

Watched with a firend who was an old fan. They were super dissappointed and said Veronica didn't used to be a complete jerk. I hadn't seen it before but was not liking it. We spoiled ourselfs after 4 episodes to see if we should keep watching. Found out it only got worse as season goes on and that Logan was killed off. My friend was so unhappy. Ironically, I thought he was the most interesting character of the show. Why make a new season guaranteed to dissappoint old fans and new people. Don't waste your time. Glad we stopped watching.
  • Not worth it

There's not really much to say about S4. Such high hopes for what it could be, and if was disappointing in nearly every way possible. What happened to Veronica Mars? I'm not sure why anyone would want it back in this form. Veronica was unrecognizable, elitist, and not at all the underdog we fell in love with. The other major players (Logan, Keith, Wallace, and Weevil) were sidelined in a way that didn't feel authentic to a show that often gave these characters their own narrative arcs/stories on some level. Don't waste your time or your money on this.
  • Love the mature Veronica Mars

Ignore the other reviews. This a refreshing view of how Veronica’s character has matured due to her career choice and relationships. Love this storyline!
  • Actually season four - avoid

    By rachelw10
This is season four, the 2019 revival, not season one. I cannot recommend it, even as someone who used to frequently rewatch the original seasons. The mystery was poorly written and uninteresting, and Veronica herself did little to solve it - no schemes, no disguises, nothing very clever at all. The Mexican cartel plot was pointless, dated, and racist. Veronica’s behavior was inconsistent with existing canon and her maturity seemed to have regressed since the movie and books for no apparent reason. It’s impossible to believe the Veronica who made spirit boxes for Wallace just because they mattered to him would be so indifferent to him and his family. The Veronica we’ve known for years should also have been more sympathetic to what Weevil was going through. It makes no sense that a Veronica who has been repeatedly drugged and raped (and has an alcoholic mother) would take E from a near-stranger in a crowded club. Overall very poorly written. And yes I was bothered by a certain final episode event, but it was far from the only problem I had with the season. I have no interest in further Veronica Mars at this point.
  • Viewer beware

Veronica is a horrible person in this season. I don’t know why any old fan wants to watch this new Veronica. I feel like new viewers would wonder why we loved this show so much. She is a terrible person all the way around. She isn’t fighting for the underdog, she only cares about herself. She is terrible to Logan, Weevil, Wallace and Keith. I have been a fan since the pilot first aired and had been hesitantly looking forward to a new season. I feel like I have been watching a different show than Rob Thomas thought he was making. The best part of original seasons were the relationships. Without the relationships there is no future for this show. Viewer beware.

I had such fond memories of this show. Watching this season tarnished all of them. Whoever wrote this and greenlight this should be fired.
  • Not worth it

A convoluted, unlikable mess. Watched the whole thing hoping it would get better because I had heard good things about the original series. It didn't. Only got worse. Felt like it was put together with spit and a prayer no one would notice how lazy the characterizations and mystery were. Relationships made no sense. Who would hang out with this woman? Most interesting character, her boyfireind, was killed off, too. In a truly dumb way. I thought Kristen Bell was supposed to be charming? She wasn't here. And neither was Veronica Mars.
  • So disappointing

    By Sandy First Twin
This 4th season of Veronica Mars -- NOT season 1 as advertised -- was devoid of almost everything that made the original series enjoyable. Veronica is now unliakable and regualry cruel without any moments of real vulnerability -- there's always a caustic edge. Logan who has always acted as the show's second lead was belittled for his gains towards mental heath and killed off in one of the worst plotted moments I can remember seeing on a show. Their 20 year relationship was also undermined to the point where you were rooting for him to break up with her, not get married, before they killed him. Her dad was shown as basically extraneous to her work life and their personal relationship was shown as having not evolved at all. The interesting story about his health was undermined by a cure-all plot contrivance in the last act. All other secondary characters that were once at the heart of the show's appeal have been relegated to cameo status. There was continuity error after continuity error with characterization and plot. And the mystery was a convoluted mess. Veronica didn't even have any other cases on her plate and yet she barely investigated anything. What the hell happened to this show?? Veronica deserved better. Logan sure as hell deserved better. Keith deserved better. Weevil deserved better. Wallace most definitely deserved better. And even absent Mac deserved better. Every single realtionship on the show deserved better. And the fans absolutely deserved better. Moving forward the creator, Rob Thomas, says he wants to reboot the show, shed all secondary characters and the town of Neptune, and abandon everything about the show that made it beloved. It will just be a starring vehicle for Kristen Bell with Veronica at her least likable, alone in the world driving from place to place. He wants a “purely detective show”. He believes it’s “the only way” the show can survive. It doesn’t make sense. That’s not what got Veronica Mars this far and if you have to betray your loyal fan base of 15 years to execute it, it isn’t a good idea. People don’t turn in to season 5 of a show when they’ve never watched before to see it completely retooled. (Especially in this day and age where streaming means people binge a show by going back to the beginning.) If you’re an established fan, you’ll be disappointed. And if you tried the show before and didn’t enjoy it, it’s unlikely you’d ever give it a second chance now. The motivations lack logic. It’s especially strange Thomas says he wants to solely focus on mystery when he readily admits he’s not a good mystery writer in interviews. The Veronica Mars mysteries have always been riddled with plot holes and illogical contrivances that were only forgiven by audience because they served as a vehicle to spend time with their favorite characters. That option for exchange is now off the table. This season’s mystery was somehow both endlessly predictable (an obviously guilty party), while also nonsensical in its motives and overall execution (the bomber’s motivation is because of one specific group and yet they target multiple others in the bombings, was suddenly able to source parts for and perfectly execute many different types of bombs, set them about town and created an alibi even though bomber was in custody and had no accomplice). To say that the mystery aspect of the storytelling is what should have more weight thrown behind it and will drive the audience is misguided at best. I used to love this show and thought the cast and creators understood why it lived on in the hearts and minds of people for 15 years - the characters, the relationships, the depiction of hope for people who had experienced trauma. That it appreciated its audience. That’s no longer true. It’s now a story about how if you try to become healthier, you’re uninteresting and expendable. If you’re emotionally stunted, repress everything, and are continually traumatized, it’s to be celebrated. If you strive towards health and what makes you happy, it’s useless because all you should really expect is more trauma. And that if you believed in loyalty and a respectful, symbiotic show/audience relationship, you were a fool. This is a sad and honestly heartbreaking turn of events for the Veronica Mars story. Veronica is no longer someone I want to spent time with and considering she's the only character who will be featured moving forward, I will definitely be saying goodbye.
  • Lost All Hope

I have loved Veronica Mars for years, rewatched all the previous seasons in preporation for this one. I hate this season. The writing was lacking. The characters were bland, except for Logan and look what happened. One of the things I always loved was that no matter what Veronica had hope but this season she, and the story, had no hope. And the ending was awful.
